Sites/components on the landscape: have to have a sample that is representative, e. g. One of the first known to rely somewhat heavily on agriculture. Certain soils are better for crop yields, clay-based soils retain more moisture. Sites are on sandy, silty soils that don"t retain moisture as well; often on sand plains. Agriculture wasn"t as important yet, still reliant on natural food products. Sandy soils are high in natural food products and prime oak-hickory forests. Natural food availability important in deciding where to make sites. Rich in game animals as well, rely on natural food stuffs as well. Maize still not as important in the diet yet. Also have evidence in the late spring-summer, the villages were largely abandoned. Set up new camps near the lakes (erie, huron) Floral material: charred corn less common than in later times: no beans (nitrogen fixers) Human skeletons: c13-c12 ratio less in this time, less reliant on maize.
