Distinctive cultures starting to evolve into their modern forms. Early pacific 4,400-1,800 bc: rainforest, sea-level, and salmon stabilization, houses, shell middens, burials. Shell middens preserved artifacts, ecofacts and other organic goods. Shells act a neutralizer in the acidic soils. Burials preserved well: specialized mammal hunting. Adapting to marine resources instead of land mammals: adzes, shell and groundstone hammers, charles culture. Glenrose site first to have artifacts unique to the northwest coast. Eulachon fish used for grease to process hides, bonding agent for paints, etc. Some groundstones, but far less than glenrose. Earliest evidence of houses, very small probably pithouses.
