Lecture 14 – RFLP and Sir Alec Jefferys  1985: Sir Alec Jefferys invented Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) for identification purposes o First use was actually on an immigration case but shortly thereafter was used to solve the first homicide case in Britain o Involves many tedious steps and requires relatively large amounts of target DNA, often more than is found at crime scenes o Utilizes electrophoresis to separate targeted fragments of DNA cut into manageable portions that are shown as bar graphs  Procedures used in RFLP Analysis o Steps involved in the RFLP
