Fieldwork: over several periods, living with a family, impacted by writing ideologies. Theoretical underpinnings: anthropology of the state and ideological model of literacy. Interest in witchcraft and understand local logic of witchcraft (wogan -researcher) Religious intertwining because government registries were not separated from church until much later. More than one person who claimed to have access to san gonzalo books, people would go and pay them to put enemy"s name in book. Many people did not believe but so culturally endowed that they would try to protect themselves against it by conforming to society"s outward belief. Commentary on the power of church and state bureaucracies. Parallels between sam gonzalo"s book and church and state record keeping. Explores the sources for their beliefs about writing. Compares with civil registry, church records (in particular baptism certificates, taxes, land titles and censuses) Civil registry is responsible for the way that this culture looks at writing.
