Cancer is the leading cause of death in north america. Is becoming more prevalent as the population ages. Cancer is caused by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells. Cancer is characterized by genetic and biochemical defects. Biochemistry and molecular biology provide avenues for cures. Benign is contained within tissue, don"t spread. Malignant tumours can spread, abnormal cells, and can move to different sites. Mialignant tumors can metastasize, they spread from their primary site to one or more secondary sites. Breaks through basal lamina, invades capillaries into bloodstream. Most cells die here, but some go through to a different tissue and start growing in a new place. Susceptibility to cancer is sometimes inherited: retinoblastoma (eye cance, xeroderma pigmentosa (skin cancer, some forms of breast, prostrate, ovarian, and intestinal cancers. Dna damaging agents cause cancer: radiation uv, x-rays, chemical mutagens benzene. Chemicals that cause cells to divide tumour promoters: don"t change dna, but cause cells to divide.
