Topic 29: cancer: cancer is the leading cause of death in north america. Will become even more prevalent as the population ages: molecular basis of cancer. Cancer is characterized by genetic and biochemical defects. Flip side/ biochemistry and molecular biology provides avenues for cures: 2 types of tumors. Can grow and be problematic but they"re usually in one spot. Tend to spread so difficult to remove: metastasis. This is the major problem of tumors. You can have a tumour and it can be positioned in one tissue (figure 20-44) In many cases, there are small micro-localized tumors that don"t grow too big because there isn"t enough nutrients. But/ tumors have a habit of being able to attract their own capillaries (angiogenesis) Some forms of breast/prostate/ovarian cancer and intestinal cancers can also be inherited. December 2, 2013: preventable causes of cancer. Avoid chemicals that cause cells to divide.
