The connection between mendelian genetics and meiosis. First person to pay close attention to scientific inquiry in the 1850"s when it related to inheritance. Darwin did not understand mechanisms of inheritance like mendel did. Blending was belived (red + blue = purple) inheritance is particulate. Variation in traits due to different alleles. Organisms inherit two alleles for each trait. Appearance is regulated by dominant alleles (determinant of phenotype in heterozygotes) Polygenic traits shown continuous variation in a population. Exhibits bell curve shape inheritance cannot be blended b/c people in the middle (intermediates) of the variation can produce extreme types. Gametes produced by punnet squares come from meiosis! Reciprocal crosses illustrate sex linkage in fruit flies.
