Document Summary

= intricate network of protein filaments that extend throughout the cytoplasm. These are huge relative to some of the other things we"ll be talking about. Note: there is not empty space or air in a cell. They dimerize really quickly into a dimer with one of each dimer. Alpha-beta dimer is basic subunit" of microtubules. These dimers polymerize and they do so in a very specific order (alpha on one side, beta on the other) One side is different than the other. When they polymerize, the initial result is called a protofilament. These have polarity as well, since they"re comprised of very specifically bound dimers (alpha on one side, beta on the other end) These protofilaments can be up to 100s of um long, which is way longer than most cells [these would be the things that stick out of cells - flagella and cilia] These protofilaments then come together to form a microtubule/tubulin.
