Lec 4 Jan 21 , 2014 Ecosystem – collection of organisms and their interaction with each other (biotic) and  their environment (abiotic) • Many components • Even more possible interactions Energy flow through systems • Red arrows going out from organisms represents respiration • Sun  ▯Up trophic levels  ▯detritus Material flows through systems (water, plant nutrients, etc) Primary producers have the greatest abundance in ecosystems Major terrestrial ecosystem types are biomes • Driven by 2 important factors: o Temperature o Precipitation • Cold and wet conditions don’t exist – cold air can’t hold water very well Tundra and Taiga • Very short growing season, very low shrubs and grasses • Low precipitation and cold temperature Boreal • Cold but higher temps n summer, greater precipitation • Better growing season Temperate biomes • Warmer temperatures and greater precipitation • Grassland has very high temps, precipitation evaporates fast • Deciduous trees have disadvantaged from conifers bc they grow new leaves o Conifers keep their leaves year rounds Desert & Chaparral • Chappral
