Lec 7 Jan 30, 2014 Fishing techniques • Large nets, different net methods Invasive species • Terrestrial examples o Emerald ash borer o Kudzu o Rats o Mongoose • Marine examples o Zebra mussels – black sea  Brought in due to water balance of ships – take in water  Moved into lakes due to boats Zebra mussels • Impacts: o Filter water and don’t leave many resources for others o Clog pipes and other lines Global catch • China saying they are overestimating fish catch o Potentially trying to lower other countries fish catch cap o Actually Due to:  Catch per unit effort used  ▯tells you if easy to catch then more fish   caught  Cod fisheries – right before the crash, there was high catch  ▯but  due to change in fishing techniques  ▯catch went up but per unit
