Lec 2 ­ 2485 Jan 14 , 2014 Thursday – lessons of rapa nui (p12) Natural selection – change in populations over time due to less adapted species dying out What is the relationship between sciences vs. fact? • Plausible ideas – through observation and testing • Supported by evidence • Experimental design – helps to have context to facts • Synthesis – what do these facts mean, combine different pieces of information to  build a conclusion Methods of testing • Designed experiments o Hard in enviro  ▯world is too large and complex • Natural experiments – use natural processes as testing methods (fire) o Unplanned comparisons • Observational studies • Simulation models – simplified version of complex systems o Allows you to pick certain key parameters as influencing factors o A set of equations that formalize our understanding and assumptions about  how individual components interact to form a complex system Population biology • Birth/death rate • Immigration vs. emigration Patterns of growth: theory • Exponential growth occurs  ▯goes to J curve • Carrying capacity is reached, population stabilizes  ▯logistic growth • Resources affect carrying capacity How do human populations grow
