Biology 2581B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Unicellular Organism, Lokiarchaeota, Metagenomics
Document Summary
Tree of life: where genes and genomes are found. Endosymbiotic event where bacterium entered eukaryotic domain: gave rise to mitochondria. Bacterium that entered eukaryotic domain came from a lineage called alpha proto bacteria. Both free-living unicellular & both have a genome made of dna. Feeding (endosymbiosis/phagocytosis) is a complex behaviour/process and cannot be performed by most known bacteria not normally seen in bacteria. It is not unusual for one unicellular organism to feed on another. Organism b undigested and inside a: normally b gets indigested and turns into food but b did not get digested, b went past pathways where it normally digested, did not get eaten. B hangs out inside a: relationship develops, b starts providing a benefit to a or vice versa, b hangs out inside a then it dies but the next time it happens, b hangs out longer. Some b is hanging out inside a: hundreds of thousands of years go by.
