Biology 1002B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Kinetic Energy, Exergonic Process, Chemical Energy
Document Summary
Kinetic energy: energy possessed by an object because it is in motion (e. g. photons) Potential energy: stored energy in objects due to their position or chemical structure. Chemical energy in molecules has to do with positions of electrons within atoms; farther away electrons are from nucleus the greater potential (chemical) energy it possesses. System is the object being studied, and surrounding is everything outside the system. Closed system: exchanges energy but not matter. Energy can be transformed from one form to another, but not created or destroyed. Energy transformations increase disorder, there"s always energy lost during transformations (efficiency is never 100%) Random disorder is called entropy, the change in entropy is always greater than 0. Second law can also be said as you can"t prevent energy from spreading. Meaning of spontaneous reaction, enthalpy (h), exothermic, endothermic, gibbs free energy, exergonic, endergonic, catalyst, rate of reaction, energy of activation (ea)
