Biology 3475A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Daytime, Genetic Variation, Sawfly
Document Summary
When there is attack, there are systemic signals which will pass through cells. In response to insects feeding on them, there are products produced which pass through the systemic system. There are defence genes, signal pathways genes and proteinase genes - various compounds, a number can be in the same plants. Wound --> systemin (a molecule) --> production of other molecules --> gene activation. Can look at specific compounds and determine when compounds are upregulated. Some are more quickly upregulated than others in a sequence of events. Caterpillar saliva is important in terms of upregulating defences - cutting with a knife and introducing caterpillar saliva induce very different responses. General wound will induce upregulation of jasmonic acid, addition of saliva induces much greater response. Induced responses are only induced in response to damage because there is a cost. Damage by the elements may be a waste of energy if plants then upregulate their defences.
