Many species associated with ants are now endangered because of pick them up. industrialisation and take-over of meadows. Ant colonies are declining, thus disappearance of rare butterflies. Close association with ants - females lay eggs on plants, larvae feed for 1- 2 weeks, reaches point of larval development when it will walk off the plant. When on the ground, ants will pick them up and carry them back to their nest. In the nest they then become a form of parasite, being fed by the ants until metamorphosis. Living in the nest is an essential part of their biology. Dendrogram of cuticular hydrocarbons, chemistry of the body surface - rebeli is the butterfly. Ant best suited is the most similar in biochemistry. Caterpillar has a chemical profile resembling the ant larvae so ants will. Can be found in association with other species but less common.
