Biology 3597A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance, Lipoprotein, Low-Density Lipoprotein
Document Summary
New topic objectives: be able to discuss the mechanisms and concepts of environmental epigenetics and trans-generational epigenetic inheritance. The winter of 1944-1945, during the german occupation of the netherlands in wwii. The dutch hunger winter is a great example of inter-generational inheritance. Figure (below) was taken from a paper studying the dutch hunger winter. The figures collectively show the dna methylation in individuals exposed to famine from conception to 10 weeks compared to non-famine exposed siblings. If you were conceived during the famine (specifically feb 45") you were found to have methylation changes at many more different genes than siblings born at a different time. This is a great example of inter-generational inheritance. Figure (next page) demonstrates male vs. female inter-generational epigenetic inheritance. A pregnant mouse was exposed to a toxin: the baby and the baby"s germ cells are exposed to this toxin as well, those effects are passed down for 2 generations.
