Document Summary

Fungal diseases are not very common, except for the superficial mycoses. Ones that get under skin (subcutaneous) and systemic are much worse but are uncommon. Here are the superficial mycoses (mycosis: infection caused by a fungus) You can have fungi growing on your hair; nonthreatening to have this. Piedra nigra: forms black lumps on your hair: in certain african cultures it"s attractive (people go into soil and rub it into hair) Piedra alba: in underarm or pubic hair; pretty inconsequential except makes underarms more odourous. These 2 come from 2 diff phyla: one is basid, one is asco. A spot on the rest of the body would be tinea corporus; athlete"s foot is tinea pedis. Dandruff is not always fungal but some dandruff is fungal. Basidiomycota growing on oils on the base of hair follicles, which causes skin flakes to appear more; not living on living tissues, just disturbing it.
