13-05-22 12:57 PM April  8,  2013   Diolcletian,  Constantine  and  the  Christians     The  Roman  Stage     -­‐The  VIP  seating  were  called  Cavea   -­‐There  wre  new  comedy  and  then  there  are  new  comedy   -­‐Old  comedy  were  more  aggressive   -­‐New  comedy  were  more  like  Friends  and  Big  Bang  Theory,  with  simultaneously  happening   plots     Theatre  architecture   -­‐The  Roman  didn’t  allow  any  permanent  architecture  for  entertainment   -­‐Pompey  got  around  this     -­‐Everyone  was  expected  to  stand  in  the  theaters,  there  are  no  chairs  or  anything   -­‐Pompey  took  temples  that  were  in  repair,  and  on  top  of  it  he  built  a  theatre   -­‐When  senates  protested  it,  he  built  a  temple  on  top  of  the  theatre  to  get  away  with  this   -­‐Marcellus  also  followed  this  act  and  built  one,  it  still  exists     Masks   -­‐Romans  wore  masks  and  wore  large  costumes   -­‐You  were  platform  shoes  to  be  elevated   -­‐Music  had  a  lot  of  lyrics  in  it   -­‐There  are  only  2  playwrights  that  survived   -­‐They  are  Greek  originals,  they’re  not  very  original   -­‐There  were  groups  of  actors  called  Mimus  that  improvise  and  entertain  you   -­‐Pantomimus  were  mime  ppl.    They  were  characters  inside  a  mime.     -­‐These  mime  people  talk   -­‐It's  a  particular  kind  of  performance  that  was  like  modern  day  ballet   -­‐Usually  it's  a  mythological  character     3  Century  Crisis       Doicletian   -­‐3  century  was  a  period  of  weak  emperors  put  up  by  the  soldier   -­‐The  empire  seems  to  be  running  on  its  own,  since  everything  was  already  sorted  out   -­‐This  is  the  low  point  of  Roman  empire     Tetrarchy   -­‐Doicletian  was  an  emperor  that  goes  back  to  the  original  ruling  formats  or  adopting     -­‐He  sets  a  rule  of  having  2  Augustus  and  2  Caesars  to  handle  the  responsibilities  together   -­‐He’s  hoping  to  get  a  orderly  format  of  ruling  the  Empire     Dominate   -­‐Doicletian  is  a  “God”   -­‐He  was  known  to  be  a  very  holy  and  wore  robes  of  Gold     -­‐It  was  an  effort  to  brainwash  people  to  eventually  believe  that  they  must  obey  him   -­‐He  tried  to  control  everything,  statism   -­‐The  more  he  tried  to  control  things,  the  more  people  acts  up   -­‐He  prosecuted  everyone  that  challenged  his  authority   -­‐Christians  refused  to  buy  into  the  belief  that  he  is  God   -­‐Eventually  steps  down  (why?  )     Constantine:  Battle  at  Milvian  Bridge   -­‐There  was  a  revolution  of  7  years  fighting  for  power   -­‐The  son  of  one  of  the  Cesar,  Constantine,  wins  at  Milvian  Bridge   -­‐He  gets  rid  of  the  4man  role  and  seize  power     Constantine   -­‐Constantine  was  originally  under  the  order  to  get  rid  of  Christians   -­‐But  he  realized  that  Christians  had  much  more  influence  than  he
