Document Summary

Descended from wealthy and influential families on both sides. Seems to have turned his back on a public career and devoted himself to philosophy. Most of his works are in dialogue form, featuring mostly people from his own rather elite social circle. Therefore a more peculiar, private, and idealized point of view than, say, the law- court speeches that survive from the same time period. But plato turned away from socrates in a few respects: Founded a philosophical school (academy); not a modern university, but more formal than what socrates did. It was called the academy because the school convened near the shrine of the hero, academus. This school survived plato, becoming more and more formalized over time. Produced a great deal of written philosophical works. Plato"s works are almost all in the form of dialogues. Maybe the most gifted prose writer in greek history.
