Development of the polis versus ethne: single leader style of government was ousted in favour of an oligarchic, development of the city state, an urban centre with hinterland surrounding, traditional markers of a polis, temple, wall. Iberia gained coinage in the 3rd century bce: sparta did not want anything to do with city development, phoenician areas were also hesitant to accept coinage, silver adopted as the dominant metal soon after. Importance of silver in iberia, attic and anatolia: the people who had access to the metal became more powerful, a reason that athens starts to stand out. Rise of independent sanctuaries: earliest, heraion on samos, delphi, olympia, delos. Intercommunity gathering spaces: competitive display, elite cohesion with different people coming together despite their status.
