Confessions: city of god (against the pagans) On christian doctrine (includes discussion of signs and signification), great text of how signs work. Linguistic cast of universe: in genesis, creation was creation in language, through a speech act. Read signs for divine signified (which is always god) Most signs are conventional (very few are natural) Sin is in intentions (book of matthew): sin has no real existence; it is just the perversion of the good. Sin is the perversion (per-verto) of the good things that god gave us, a misreading of this world. The perversion is in our reading/embracing of the world. Father sipping a martini, sees it as a beautiful creation of god, he is loving god through the martini. Caritas: loving god through his signs (using the signs), a selfless love. Cupiditas: loving the signs for the signs (enjoying them), selfish love. Furor, fructose (to enjoy) fructos = fruit, forbidden fruit.
