We have witnessed the rise of a new two economy system. Efficiency" and increased productivity are central to neoliberal practices and philosophies. Efficiency has become a code word promoting markets and competition over the public sphere, and profitability above all else (taylor 42) 1st industrial revolution: mechanized technologies and the factory system. 2nd industrial revolution: modular automation and the assembly line. Part of the 4th revolution is the rise of artisanal digital fabrication. Used to require expensive access, now its a personal scale, you can be your own manufacturer. Student loans = a generation of wage slavery. What is cost disease of the arts? (p. 43) Privileges amateurs at the expense of experts. The arts suffer from a productivity lag (p. 44), physical output per hour . Culture is a gift, a kind of glue, a covenant, but one that, unlike barter, obliges nothing in return. (taylor 50)
