** south park epi on exam!
Foucault Governmentality
- Way you produce citizens/bodies through acts of governance
- “The art of government”
- Citizen production
- Organized practices
- Disperse and diffuse power (knowledge)
Neoliberal Governmentality
- Neoliberalism: economic way of thinking, makes people want to be more visible and easily
monitored for marketing and surveillance purposes
o Having liberal values coupled w/ a dedication to free-market capitalism
- Forms of disciplinary power:
o Panopticon: surveillance of the many by the few
o Omniopticon: the surveillance of the many by the many (to see and be seen)
o Synopticon: the surveillance of the few by the many
Power and Foucault
- Power can also be lateral
o i.e. lateral power between duties and structures
- “where there’s power there’s resistance”
o if power is a relation between us, then there’s also the opportunity to change that
relationship (it’s a relation, not just something you embody)
- We’ve moved to biopower: 2 poles
o Disciplinary pole (panpoticon, etc)
Normalizing power, creates norms and social controls
o Biopolitics pole
Management of populations
Involves: science, medicalization, measuring, dataveillance, etc.
Interlocking Axes of Governance (Foucault/Humphreys)
- We see these forms of governance in VWs:
- Fields of visibility
o As a relation of power
o Techniques used to make the population visible and knowable (avatars and stylization of
avatars, etc.)
- Technologies and techniques of government practices that seek to shape those governed
o Think about architectural relations that we have
i.e. if you’re a disabled person, you can move through the world just fine until
you hit a curb; the restroom rebate
o Relation of power between you and the environment
