Seismology the study of elastic sound acoustic seismic waves propagating through the earth: seis greek for sound. Because of earthquakes, the seismic waves they give off and the instrument used to gather data about such events, we now know the chemical composition temperature, density and depth of the layers of the earth"s i(cid:374)terior. Body waves the importa(cid:374)t o(cid:374)es for earth"s i(cid:374)ter(cid:374)al structure: moves fast. P-waves primary or compressional: moves fast, waves are propagated right, arrives first. S waves secondary or shear: arrives second. Surface waves, love waves and rayleigh waves slow waves. Bulk modulus, k measure of how compressible a substance is. Shear modulus measure of the deformation of a substance when it experiences a force parallel to ones of its surface. Earthquake energy moves out in 3d shells away from the source. Ray paths - we present outward moving energy as arrows. Which are always at a right angle to the shell.
