Earth Rocks Lecture 8 Relative Time • Rock record into sequence • Which rock is older than the other • Superposition: each bed is older than the one above, and younger than the one  below • Original horizontally: sediment is usually deposited horizontally o Rocks that have been tilted and has changed them since they have been  laid down horizontally • Sandstone has to be younger, but older than any rock that was on top of it • Cross­cutting relations: a fault is younger than the rock it cuts o A rock is younger than the rock it cuts  • Inclusions: inclusions are older than the rock containing them • Unconformity: no rocks formed o Angular unconformity: between flat and tilted, eroded beds  Most famous: in Scotland  Rocks get squeezed or buckled  After uplift of plate tectonics – the rocks get stripped off  Subsidence due to tectonics and new rocks are under the sea water  Beds below that are tilted  Unconformity: uplift, tilting, erosion and rocks that are missing
