Document Summary

Serpents and spitfires: marine reptiles and flying reptiles. Some animals went back to living in the sea during the mesozoic. As the abundance of plankton increased, the number of fish also increased: this could have led to animals going back to the water. The great diversification of reptiles, beginning in the triassic period, and coming to a head in the cretaceous period, included the appearance and great success of marine and flying reptiles. Among the marine reptiles were the ichthyosaurs (euryapsids), plesiosaurs (also euryapsids), marine turtles (anapsids or possibly diapsids) and mosasaurs (diapsids: none of these reptiles were dinosaurs. At least in the early part of the mesozoic era, pterosaurs ruled the skies. Large eyes which led to the development of a bone ring around it. Fins developed without the support of bone. Length of neck for darting movement to catch prey. The mesozoic world was a greenhouse world.
