Document Summary
Modern monuments and stone sculpture: stone and modern aesthetics. One of 200 standing stones in europe function of standing stones remains a mystery. Thought to have been built in three spate stages. First version appears to have been built in 3000 b. c. Consisted of a ditch and adjacent banks surrounding a ring of 56 small pits called aubrey holes. 2500 b. c, 4 tonne of bluestones were installed at the center of stonehenge. Bluestone consists of different rocks including rhyolite and dolerite. Has been speculated that bluestones were transported from wales by glaciers during the ice age. 2300 b. c sarsen stones (blocks of hard sandstone) were installed one set as a horseshoe, and one forming a 33m ring surrounding the bluestone. The sarsen stones were capped by horizontal lintels. Since its completion, stonehenge has experienced some damage, many lintels have fallen from their original position.
