Earth Sciences 2266F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Praeanthropus, Vocal Folds, Neanderthal
Document Summary
Lucy, the very first hominid fossil, used to be called australopithecus. Eventually lucy from australopithecus got renamed as praeanthropus. From one of these, humans split in the homo lineage. Not a direct line from australopithecus to homo; it"s from the ancestor before (praeanthropus) Started with curly digits seen on bottom left. Most of the fossil evidence in this group found in africa, within ethiopia. Region of all the lakes is the east african rift: it opened and closed several times, ending up with very deep lakes and volcanoes spewing up volcanic ash and deposits. This is good for preserving fossils; hominid fossils may have been elsewhere as well but it wouldn"t be preserved. At each letter, we can see what features develop. If you look at any of these subtle differences, we pay a lot of attn so people scrutinize it more so there"re more descriptors. Some bones are slightly bigger and slightly longer; there are probably more differences between.
