Document Summary

The stories in this section were written during the twentieth century, and each one finds a way to give old tales a new twist. This story is famous, however, because of the ways munsch breaks away from. Munsch uses several fairy-tale conventions in this story: the princess, the castle, Robert munsch"s the paper bag princess the dragon, the rescue. In many ways, elizabeth is a typical fairy-tale hero; her behaviour fits right into the brain over brawn category. Munsch combines two separate strands of the fairy-tale tradition: he writes a story of clever determination (like the brave little tailor ), but then frames it as if it were a romantic fairy tale (like sleeping beauty ). What is new, here, is the way elizabeth rescues ronald she uses cleverness and courage instead of self-sacrifice, and she sets out on her journey alone a bold move for a fairy-tale heroine.
