Twain directs us to be a little suspicious of her. This is the difference between a book club reading of this, we have to look into. We place her as almost a villain. Didn"t really sit and think about it or revisit it. She has nobody else to look out for her and her son. He published it too fast because he needed the money. Feels like a novel about a lot of different things. None of the characters are eminently likeable. At the time (1890s) there was a lot of anger and court cases about african- People turned to the kkk as an extra-legal form on punishment. They were coming out with anti-black propaganda at the time. Poll taxes, literacy tests in order to vote. This prevented blacks from gaining any power. The kkk were trying to keep the blacks (cid:498)in their place(cid:499) Twain didn"t agree with this, he fought against u. s. imperialism.
