Browning: called the sonnets from the portuguese partly because ebb and robert had a shared love for. She put the title on them to make them sound like a translation, even though they are not. Robert"s pet name for ebb was also my portuguese : series of lyrics in which the speaker expresses a strong feeling. The lyrics are strung together, which dramatizes a story. Our job as readers is to figure out the story that connects these lyrics: sonnet was invented by petrarch in 14th century. Ebb is thinking of italian model of sonnets, not the english model. Rhyme scheme for ebb is: abba abba cdcdcd: ebb uses the sonnet"s convention but also messes with them. Sonnet is a 14 line form, instead of breaking into 7 and 7 they usually break into 8 line (octave) section and 6 line section (sestet)
