Another meaning: character or quality that makes something appeal strongly to the imagination and sets it apart from mundane; an air of wonder, mystery and remoteness from everyday life suggestive of adventure, heroism, chivalry, etc. Mid to late 18thc political revolutions i. e. usa declaration of independence, french revolution. Lots of writers born in this time period. In 19thc literacy spread a lot because of laws to increase education the technological developments of the time also made it cheaper to print things which meant more books and newspapers published.
