English 1022E Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: World War I, Dramatic Monologue
Document Summary
Allowing the poet to step past their own subjecive experiences. Doesn"t think emoions can be systemaized and controlled: the creaion of artwork should ideally look like a science experiment, artwork should ideally approach the condiion of science. Eliot wants this, no bullshit: precise, almost mathemaical terms, but emoions cannot be systemaized this way. Temporal and special boundaries that cannot be exceeded. What we see is a small porion, our ime is limited. Experiencing everything life, and death, has to ofer is impossible: you will never experience everything that you think you should experience. The dramaic monologue is a way that they can be others. We only have one death and we will not understand it. We understand what it means to die through the death of others/characters. Eliot: it"s not simply like freedom, art is a space where the arist kills himself to become something else, to create, poetry is suicide, there will be ime to murder and create .
