Document Summary

English 1027 lecture 1 september 7th 2017. ***narrative*** - a sequence of events, real or imaginary, that are arranged as a record or imitation of life. What part do stories play in our sense of self, how the self belongs to a large community, and what fantasies/desires/needs do they fulfill. What culture work do stories perform for us? communication with future by way of the past. Communicate what was important, how to transmit what you believe is needed to survive. It is an imitation of life, clearly not an observation. It has a sense of drama, shape, and purpose. It has characters (agents) that drive the story forward. How do you know something is a story: a narrative is a structured form, appears casual or spontaneous but is logical. Took what was a saying and used it literally. Rather than describing reality, what if language makes reality.
