English 1028F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Artificial Life, Lord Byron
Document Summary
The novel is not anti science, mary is opposed to the pursuits that do not add value to a community. This promethean ambition results in alienation from nature and community. Victor is cut off from the rhythms of nature, he sees beauty but does not go out and enjoy them. He is alienated from his family, doesn"t respond to his parents letters. Knowledge worth pursuing must be worth value to more than just oneself. Victor"s alienated knowledge has no origin in its community. The novel clearly establishes the theme right from the outset. Our thoughts require keeping my thoughts want keeping keeping-perspective. The thoughts are kept by someone else, and also put into another perspective. The importance of opening the self to the other- this is embodied in the very structure and form of the novel. Narrative perspective- the standpoint from which the story is told. The lens or eye through which the story is presented.
