English 2033E Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Redcap
Document Summary
The self-testing questions are a good way of seeing if you understand. We look at the fairy tales because they form the foundation of children"s literature. Lecture teaches you how to analyze what you are reading. First you observe the details of the text and from there you analyze to look at the underlining meaning. Catching yourself being surprised is good to recognise when reading because it challenges assumptions that you may have. Look for patterns in what you are reading--what do these patterns say about the story or what they are trying to teach. What is the text saying about gender roles, innocence or social class. Very different than the disney versions that we are used to now. Children were not always the intended audience--folk tales circled for centuries in oral traditions before be written down or targeted for obvious.
