He was never at the top of the hierarchy: dad then mom then gretel, strict parents. Bruno is frightened of kotler and says he doesn"t know shmuel. He learns to be a better person from shmuel than his parents. His friendship from shmuel is good for his moral developmental. If bruno did obey his parents, it would be physically safe but morally compromised which is what is happening to gretel. Gretel is not adventurous and tries to mimic adults and their views: developing a patriotic identity, she"s learning a lot from her dad, daddy"s girl. Figure of bruno"s father described as a reasonably nice guy: not depicted as a monster or a bully, authoritarian way of parenting but he"s kind.
