Readings posted to owl (no quiz next week) Period of renaissance and reformation: changes happening in number of spheres but interconnect, change in how people view the world. Renaissance: vast reaching period, many spurs, rediscovery of ancient texts, partially because churches have kept them. Some from before christianity (revelation in itself: humanists, devoted to learning that was not necessarily related to the church. Idea of renaissance man grew out of humanist movement. Learning as broad spectrum of fields of knowledge: church as too rich, too corrupt, motivated by money, taking up concubines, did not present the movement that the church "should" represent. Sale of indulgences: to reduce time in purgatory, great way for the clergy to make money. Fit observable phenomena: observations had not increased any more, but copernicus decided that this would simplify. Strong nationalist element in england and germany: also best interest for business to cut rome out and keep money for themselves.
