ENGLISH 1022E October 26 , 2010 ENGLISH – Lecture 13 SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT… o Quest: perilous journey, crucial strength, exaltation of the hero o “Willing suspension of belief” – Coleridge o Verse paragraph, alliterative verse, bod + wheel o Seven Deadly Sins:  Pride  Greed  Lust  Envy  Gluttony  Wrath  Sloth (negligence, indifference, laziness, an inability to pray) o Long Poem: “neither epical in scope nor yet wholly lyrical in quality” – W.M. Dixon and H.J.C. Grievson, The English Damassus  “Green Knight” is hybrid o Distinctly post-modem form of poetry Overview of Romance… o Simplified Characters: Good or Evil o Exotic Settings: different from us in place, time and class (aristocratic world) o Episodic Plot: separated story into different parts with separate events Simplified Characters… o Willing suspension of disbelief (like Roadrunner), don’t ask (why doesn’t Donald Duck wear pants?). We accept it as true. o No toilets in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, they don’t deal with realities of day to day life…no questions asked. o Background on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight:  Not typical romance in medieval period, written almost at end of medieval period…  Complex, beautifully structured poem… ENGLISH 1022E October 26 , 2010  Part 1 and Part 4: both set in court of King Arthur  Part 3 and Part 4: court of Green Knight  Part 1 and Part 2: both have bargain  Part 2 and Part 3: parallel hunt (by lady, by green knight)  Part 1 and Part 2: two sets of axe blows  Playful poem, but deeply serious in moral issues  Structure has invited argumentation Settings… o Distant from here and now o Place and time (star trek) o Future or past o Far distant in class (like Gossip Girl, don’t live the way we do), extremely wealthy o “Gawain” – England, different time, different class o Ultimate Escape:  Escaping from here and now  Escaping to somewhere else  Line 72  richly coloured world, entire into gorgeous place with gorgeous people, into a world where characters behave differently o Code of Chivalry:
