Prefect:
Observation
Empirical
Gadgets  microscopes
Calculations  calculates volume of room
oMathmatician; NOT POET
Holmes:
Collects facts out in the field  again uses sharp physical senses and gadgets
Important for Holmes is the ORDER  collects facts THEN forms theories
oStarts with empirical evidence gathering
oThen interprets evidence (sometimes with an intuitive leap)
Armchair and Magnifying Glass detective
Because he goes out and gets facts before theorizing, he goes in with biases that
he doesn’t even realize
Dupin:

Deathly Hallows  Harry finds three horcruxes
Uses theory before he acts
oWhen he finds Hufflepuff’s Cup, he thinks about why Bellatrix was so
upset when she thinks that they were in her vault and makes a theory
that the Cup is in her vault
oAlso theorizes with Diadem  thinks a horcrux is at Hogwarts and knows
it was something to do with Ravenclaw
oWith the Locket, he follows the clues from one to another  Holmes’
method or Accidental Detective
Intuition is really shown when he sees the Doe patronus  he just knows that it
isn’t going to hurt him and he responds at an instinctive level
Harry might be too intuitive and Hermione is too much the mathematician so
they balance each other out
Gothic
Focuses on the anxieties we have about knowledge
Calling into question the things we normally rely on to know about ourselves and the
world around us
Things that make us question our physical senses
Am I going crazy? Is my mind stable?
Categories we use to sort the world are made blurry
Division between self and other  doppelganger, possession
The world of the living and the dead
By the end of Chamber and Azkaban, we get rationale explanations
Certain disciplines of magic are inherently threatening to our idea of knowledge
Divination
The conscious and controlled aspects of magic  wand use, spells that produce
predictable effects
In Deathly Hallows, the WANDS are made uncanny (opposite in other books)
