His aitude to the poem could be compared to that of a private detecive: it is a search for a kind of unforgeing (aletheaia = truth) Modernism is a symptom of modernity in that it remembers, represents, and quesions modernity"s claim to a kind of sense that is technological or historical. The text itself should be read as a kind of allegory of the decay that is part and parcel of our idea or concept of the city (how we try to raionalize the city through urban planning. It resists an impulse to rebuild and make it all make sense.
