Document Summary

Polluting our waters: stream/river pollution moderate pollution rapidly recoverable; high flow; they constantly have new input of water. In streams and rivers dilution and biodegradation naturally remove/reduce pollution to a limit. Too much pollution inhibits natural recovery or if river/stream is not flowing or has reduced flow. In developed countries: wastewater treatment plants and laws for industries mean point source pollution is not as much of a problem now. Though previously (before the environmental movement, epa, clean water act etc. ) point source pollution was a problem (recall: cuyahoga river in ohio caught fire 2x because of pollution) Non-point sources are still problematic, though some regulations, such as homeowner bans on pesticide use, help to reduce it. Developing countries: growing population, poverty and lack of laws mean point source and non-point are both big problems. Many uses of rivers and streams have religious/cultural links that lead to pollution.
