Week 1, sem 2: tues. jan 9th, 2018 (week 14) Test: know directors, characters, actor names, crew names (composer, producer, etc. ) Freudian theories still dominant in modern/western thought, despite criticism. Year lumiere brothers first commercial screening (1895) was same year freud"s. Inanimate images only come to life when we watch it. Reading a patient"s dreams were critical to freud"s psychoanalysis. Critics read signs in film to reveal psychology of a culture/nation, whereas freud reads patient"s dreams to reveal psychology of individual. No single right meaning; interpret dream and film, which can open up numerous meanings. Freud had little interest in cinema, but many followers were deeply interested, and some filmmakers deeply interested in psychoanalysis. After wwii when more people started seeing psychiatrists or psychologists, they became heroes in film. Many themes in common, including love, war, sexuality, family, death, etc. Psychoanalysis readings are diverse (ideology and institutions, ctc. )
