Auteur theory: = a way of understanding films (became known in 1950s- auteur" = french connotations & theoretical connotations of being an important theory, popularized in usa by andrew sarris) = it is one of the oldest/most conservative way to approach films classification. This theory holds that a film bears the creative imprint of one individual, usally the director. Includes; themes, political involvement, construction of plot, use of particular actors, use of specific sounds/music, & aesthetics. Auteur theory implies an operation of decipherment > it reveals authors where none had been seen before. 3 premises of the auteur theory by andrew sarris: 3) technique the distinguishable personality of a director is a criterion of value interior meaning is extrapolated from the tension b/w a director"s personality and his material.
