Thomas schatz: simply stated, a genre film whether a western or a musicall, a screwball comedy or a gangster, film involves familiar, one-dimensional characters acting out a predictable story pattern within a familiar setting . Much more to genre film than this definition suggests. Categorization of film is dependent on outer and inner forms of work. Convention: tacit agreement between the artist and the audience with respect to established practices and beliefs. Secondary character: black guy, slut, non-believers, believers, Settings: mist, gothic houses, suburbs, dark settings, nighttime, etc. Props: primarily weapons; wood, kitchen knives, chainsaws, masks, claws, teeth, grotesque makeup, cloaks, masks, rope, pillows, etc.
