Lbw infants: an indicator of poor nutrition status of mother before or during pregnancy. Premature infants born early, but right size for gestational age. Sga babies small for gestational age, small for date, may or may not be premature. Both predictor of health problems in infant: high risks of mortality, lower adult iq, educational disadvantage, short stature, high risk for chronic diseases in later life. Infant is larger, born later (macrosomia: 2x risk for ntds, risks for gestational diabetes, hypertension, c-section may be needed, greater risk of heart defects and other abnormalities. Needs healthy sperm, low fertility can be due to: too few fruits and vegetables, sedentary lifestyle, too much alcohol, smoking. Better nutrition = successful pregnancy = better outcome: a healthy uterus supports implantation of fertilized ovum and growth of placenta. Placenta: active, metabolic organ, supplies nutrients, hormones, oxygen to fetus, waste removal from fetus, prepares breasts for lactation. Umbilical cord pipeline from placenta to fetus.
