The role of the atmosphere and earth"s energy receipt. Adiabatic changes in temperature occur due to changes in pressure of a gas while not adding or subtracting any heat. Pressure, volume and temperature of a gas all related to each other (pv/t=k: this relates to how expanded gas is than pressurized gas. Temperatures of gases can be changed by the pressure as is common in the atmosphere. Air temperature as we move away from the ground. Generally warm near surface and declining with altitude: reason for this occurrence is due to the energy of the sun heating up the ground. Rate (on average) 6. 4 degrees celsius/1000 meters in troposphere. Temperature inversion would occur at sudden intervals where the temperature would shift. Cases where this would happen would be in events such a coastal cities (example la) has warm layer of air.
