Doppler radar (one example is located in exeter ontario), this device sends out radio waves that bounces off of precipitation it is falling and the radar can figure out the trajectory and cause of this. The large bodies of water absorb energy during the summer and further absorb energy during the winter months. This creates lake effects snow the cold mass of air would be dry and cold. It moves along the great lakes and the water is evaporated from the lake into the atmosphere as the humidified air is moved to the other shore of the lake and lifted. This air is lifted and causes precipitation on the leeward side of the great lakes. The streamers of clouds moving away from the lake would cause snow to form and more moisture is being added to it to form clouds. Frontal: different temperatures of air fronts meeting each other forcing the warmer air mass to rise.
