The environment: that which sustains and surrounds us. The biosphere = where all three come together. Humans can be blind to their impact. Humans have become the active and dominant agents of environmental change. Humans are now transforming the earth on a geological scale. Bedan 1 july 1945, the first nuclear detonation. Replaces the holocene of last 12,000 years (last ice age) Extend and improve material and immaterial culture. We try to make things easier for ourselves. Use identifiable resources be they natural objects, phenomena, or forces and we use those to minimize our own energy expenditures and improve our quality of life. Eg. how the labour is used, the mode of its execution. We are not the only tool makers. Discovery: through recognition and observation of nature (scientific method) Invention: a mental process of creating a tool. Energy to transform landscape on huge scale. Overcame tyranny of darkness: expand work day.
