Cutter et al. (2003) the big questions in geography. There are major issues that geographers are not addressing adequately. A reason for the disconnect between capability to help solve problems and the application of those skills is the sociology of the discipline of geography. Most geographers are academicians therefore they research obscure topics. Plays a role in simulating the research that addresses big questions by recognizing and publicizing work. Researchers are more willing to undertake work if they get recognition. Communication of geographic research is a challenge in the discipline. Spatial regularity and variability in large and small scales. Being able to explain variability drives geography. Is there a deeply held human need to organize space by creating arbitrary borders, As civilization grew, so did the arbitrary borders, etc Need to protect what"s mine and provide privacy. Lack of understanding of how our delinearization of space affects our perception of it. Designation of boundaries without respect to cultures is problematic.
